Call the Turtle Hotline!
If you see a turtle on land, or showing signs of distress in the water, please call our Hotline: 647-491-4057
We respond to calls about all turtles who are seen on land, including those that are injured, or deceased. We will send a volunteer to assist turtles crossing roads, protect nests and nesting mothers, and assist hatchings (baby Turtles) to get safely to water
The Hotline is monitored by volunteers from about 7 AM - 9 PM every day.
Seasonal Turtle Activity:
March: Turtles will come out of brumation and may be seen basking on logs
Spring: Turtle mating season, Painted Turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests (some Snapping Turtle and Blandings hatchlings may also emerge).
Late May to mid July: Nesting season, Mamas leave the water to lay their eggs on land. This is one of the most dangerous times of the year for turtles, as they are often crossing roads.
Late summer to fall: Snapping Turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests.
Late October to March: Turtles will go into a form of hibernation called brumation. At this time they may cross roads to get to their winter wetlands or their spring/summer wetlands.
