July 6 - Weekly Volunteer Email
Aaniin/Hello Everyone,
Volunteer Shellabration Ice Cream Party!!!
July 8 in High Park and July 9 at Brick Works
This has been our biggest turtle nesting season ever! We'd love to celebrate you by eating ice cream together. We hope you can make it to one of the two shell-a-brations this week. In the west end we will gather in the High Park Nature Centre restoration centre on July 8. In the east end we will gather at Brick Works on July 9.
Please RSVP by 9AM Wednesday, July 8. This gives us enough time to know how much ice cream to purchase and to ensure we meet everyone's dietary needs.
High Park location: Behind the Nature Centre (375 Colborne Lodge Dr) near the Bloor Street entrance. We will be behind the building in OURSPACE
Brickworks location: Meet at the front of the big pond
Volunteer T-shirts or Tank Tops
(please read if you haven't received yours)
If you paid for a t-shirt or tank top but haven't received it, please send us an email, with your name and your preferred size. We will do our best to get your items to you ASAP.
If you are interested in purchasing a second shirt/tank top, we will have them available at the Shellabration. You can pay with cash or etransfer
Tick Checks
Please ensure you do tick checks after each shift in the park. I found one embedded in my back thigh last night after being in Sam Smith Park.
There are many precautions you can take to minimize risk: wear light clothing, use tick repellent, wear pants and tuck them into socks, and tuck in shirt
Ideally take a shower after removing your clothing in the tub/shower and place the items in a sealed bag to wash. Thoroughly rinse your body and hair, while focusing on areas where ticks like to embed themselves. See links below
Use a tick card or tweezers to remove ticks; get help identifying tick, and see a doctor for antibiotics if needed

Updates:
Sadly, an adult Male Painted Turtle lost his life on the road at Ellis Ave and Queensway this week.
We have protected 110 nests so far (61 snapping, 47 painted, 1 map, 1 Giizis). Since the last volunteer email, we have protected 13 more nests.
We have also safely walked at least 13 RES turtles back to the water. Please remember we can only expose their eggs immediately after laying their eggs, not later.
Some nests have been excavated
