Carrying Brown Paper Bags on Shift
We encourage volunteers to carry a couple brown paper bags with them when they are on shift. They make a good emergency hatchling transportation option if a sanitized plastic container is not available!
Brown paper bags are also helpful for containing birds, in the event that we need to help transport an injured bird to the Toronto Wildlife Centre. Suzanne, a Turtle Protector and TWC volunteer says,
“When TWC need to contain birds while cleaning out enclosures, we use brown paper lunchbags (this is for smaller songbirds so we need to size up for bigger birds) folded over several times at the top. This keeps them calm - it is really cute to see the little bags all lined up on the bench.”
You can fold brown paper bags up so they don’t take up much room in your bag or pocket! They also don’t need to be sanitized, simply use a new bag for transport and then recycle it after you are finished using it.
Smaller brown paper bags are useful for hatchlings and small birds.
Larger birds will need a larger bag!
