Nov 3, 2026 - Volunteer Email

Aaniin everyone,

It has been a while since the last volunteer email.  We hope the past weeks have been good for you.  We can't believe it is already November.  The season has passed by quickly.  I am eagerly waiting to wrap up the season to take a good long break!

Due to unnaturally warm temperatures for this time of year, we continue to monitor nests.  Today reached above 20 degrees!  We don't know how this weather is impacting turtles who should be in brumation at this time of year, or the impacts on other animal relatives.  Therefore, observation during this time is helpful.

SCHEDULE:

  • We know these temperatures have extended the season, and some people may no longer be able to check nests

  • If possible, we hope blocked nests can be checked twice daily this week during the afternoon and early evening

  • Check other nests once daily. This ensures no other animal relatives like birds, are trapped under the protectors

  • Hopefully seasonal temperatures will arrive so we can formally wrap up the season.

NESTS:

  • Nest protectors will remain over unhatched nests. If hatchlings have emerged from a nest, remove the protector.

  • We know Painted Turtles can overwinter.  In the past we have seen Snapping and Blanding's hatchlings in the spring.  This is possible due to mild winters or lots of snow insulating the nest.  We know some Snapping Turtle nests haven't emerged.  Unless hard soil prevents hatchlings from emerging, we lack justification under our permits to excavate these nests

VOLUNTEER T-SHIRTS:

  • We had a very busy season and may have dropped the ball with some responsibilities.  If you paid for a second shirt or tank top, or if you want a second one please complete this form.  We will bring them to the Ceremony and the Shellabration.  Otherwise Jenny is willing to drop them off at park storage lockers/bins.

  • Reminder to complete the form to let us know whether or not you plan to attend the gathering.

  • This year, Indigenous caterer Nookomis Kitchen will provide a meal (three sisters soup (vegan option), venison chili, wild rice, bannock.  This is a way to honour you for all that you have done to support turtles and Turtle Protectors this year.

  • Everyone must RSVP to ensure we have enough food.  This is our first year having funds to hire a caterer.

  • We will also have a sharing circle for people to share their stories
