Aaniin/Hello everyone,
I hope you and loved ones are well. Sorry for not sending an email last week. I have been so busy with other commitments.
Miigwetch to everyone for all of your support! Words can not fully express our gratitude for you all! We know this work requires a huge commitment! Some of you have needed to step away for personal reasons, please know we are so thankful to you and our thoughts are with you.
We are getting so close to the end of the season! Nest monitoring will continue until the end of this month. But if temperatures are above 15 degrees anytime in November, we ask that nests be checked at least once during the day when the temperature peaks.
HATCHLINGS/TURTLES
If hatchlings emerge at this time of year or later, we will contact biologists to see if TWC has the capacity to overwinter them. TWC may be at capacity and unable to house them over winter. We know hatchlings require significant care over those winter months
Please note that chilly morning or evening temperatures may make hatchlings less responsive. Therefore, contact the Hotline as we may wait for daytime temperatures to increase before releasing them
Mick, an older Snapping Turtle in HP was on land for a week just last week. He was brought to South Duck Pond. HP volunteers, please continue to monitor this area, especially where there are gaps in the iron fence, under the fence, and along the creek in the open field
If any nest has had some hatchlings emerge and three days have passed, please inform the Hotline. Due to the time of year, we will excavate the nest
Mentors, if any Snapping Turtle nests haven't emerged, please inform the Hotline so Adore can inform us
PERMIT:
The permit is now available on Volunteer Central, it is only valid for 2026.
SCHEDULE:
Please continue to sign up for shifts to monitor nests. We are in the home stretch!
NEST PROTECTORS:
We have decided to leave the protectors over the unemerged nests for the winter. We are aware they could be tripping hazards. So please secure the flags around the protector's stakes. This way, the flags will be visible. Mentors, if parks don't have flags, please inform us.
EVENTS:
Celebration of Life Ceremony: November 8th from 11am to 2pm in High Park
End of Year Shellabration: November 15th from 1pm to 4pm. We ask all volunteers to complete this survey to let us know whether or not you will be attending and to provide preferences: CLICK HERE
We hope you all have a lovely week ahead,
Carolynne and Jenny
